Canary Date Palm

The canary date palm or Phoenix canarienis is one of the most common palm trees found in Las Vegas. It can grow to be 30-60 ft tall and is slow growing. It is considered to be a hardy palm tree and can be grown wherever the temperature doesn’t drop below 14 degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods of time.

The canary date palm produces a fruit that should be trimmed off yearly. If left too late in the year the fruit will drop to the ground and burst.

Sometimes the canary date palm is mistakenly called a pineapple palm. It is not related to pineapples in anyway, but this name comes from its appearance which does resemble a giant pineapple.

If you have any questions about canary date palms call Nevada Tree at 702-433-4700. Our professional team can help you determine the best time to trim your canary date palm to keep it looking its best!

Mulching

Benefits of Mulching

There are many benefits of mulching if it is done properly with other tree care strategies. When mulching the goal is to make the conditions for the tree as close to the native environment as possible. Trees do not do well when surrounded by grass.

Mulching will keep down weed growth, keep the soil and roots cooler in the summer heat, reduce evaporation, and natural mulch will degrade and return nutrients to the soil over time.

Mulching- How to do it properly

Mulch should be 2 to 3 inches deep. It should begin a few inches away from the trunk of the tree and extend it as far as the surrounding landscape will allow. Mulch should not be applied around and up the base of the trunk if it can be avoided. Plastic sheeting is not found in natural environments and should be avoided.

Soil Testing

Soil testing is an important method in caring for newly planted trees because it tells a lot about the makeup of the soil surrounding a tree. Important decisions for meeting a trees needs can be made with this information. To test the soil around a newly planted tree, a sample should be taken from the area just outside of where the roots were planted.

Nevada Tree, a Las Vegas tree service, can tell many things from soil testing, including the pH, soil type, concentration of important nutrients, and percentage of organic matter in the soil. This information will be used to determine the need for adding nutrients or adjusting the pH of the soil. It can also show how much water is filtering through the soil around the tree.

If you have any questions or need soil testing done around your trees, contact Nevada Tree at 702-433-4700.

There are many factors that affect how your trees should be watered including location of the tree, soil conditions, weather, any root damage, age of the tree, and species of the tree. Here are some basic guidelines to watering your trees in Las Vegas in the summer.

  1. Water deeply, not frequently. Most areas of Las Vegas have clay soil which is much slower to drain than sandy soil. This means trees do not need to be watered as often. When watering your tree you want to make sure the water seeps down to where the roots are, usually 18-24 inches deep. Don’t water again until this area has dried completely. Aim to water your trees about twice a week in the summer time. If you are having to water more often, consider watering the tree for longer periods each time.
  2. Don’t water directly on the trunk of the tree or the immediate surrounding area as this can make your tree susceptible to disease. The roots extend below ground far beyond the top of the tree. Water the ground under the outer portion of the tree canopy and beyond.
  3. Mulch can help keep the soil around the tree from drying out. Consider adding mulch to your landscaping to help conserve water.
  4. There are many different types of irrigation systems including hoses, drips, and sprinklers. Consult a professional tree service to find out which is best for your trees in your area.

Tree Services Las Vegas – Fertilizing

Newly Planted TreesTree fertilizing is usually not necessary the first year after planting a tree. Sometimes a nutrient deficiency exists which can be found through soil testing or when symptoms are seen in the tree. In this instance proper fertilizing will benefit the tree. A tree service can advise you on what is best for your individual tree.

Fertilizing can be detrimental

If a new tree absorbs large quantities of nutrients it will respond with too much growth of new shoots instead of developing a good root system. Newly planted trees need to develop this root system to provide proper support for the tree, to absorb enough water, and to find nutrients in the soil. Avoiding unnecessary fertilizing will allow the tree to grow at a proper rate, with healthy roots and the amount of new growth that the roots can support.

Nevada Tree, a tree service in Las Vegas, knows the signs when trees need fertilizing. They can advise you on the best way to care for your trees including the right fertilizer.

Tree Pruning- Newly Planted Trees

Tree PruningPruning a newly planted tree should be done with caution and only when absolutely necessary. New trees need their leaves to photosynthesize. Removing the leaves or stems can harm a trees ability to thrive. Some pruning might be necessary to fix the trees structure. Broken branches, crossing and rubbing stems are examples of problems that should be fixed with pruning.

Tips for Tree Pruning

  • Tree pruning should not be done until you have fully inspected the tree. Before making any cuts, inspect from the top of the tree to the bottom.
  • Keep tools sharp.
  • For high branches use a pole pruner, or call a professional tree service. In the Las Vegas area call Nevada Tree at 702-433-4700.
  • Don’t prune more than 1/4 of a trees crown in a single year.
  • When shortening a branch make the cut about 1/4 inch from a bud that will grow in an outward direction.

For major pruning jobs on large trees it is best to be safe and have the work done by a professional. If you have any questions contact Nevada Tree at 702-433-4700.

Tree Care

Staking newly planted trees should be avoided if possible. There are benefits to staking a tree, but they usually do not outweigh the consequences. During the first year after a tree is planted, it is crucial for a strong root structure to develop. Trees that are not staked but allowed to sway in the wind respond by producing roots in appropriate number and sizes to handle the wind.

There are exceptions to this rule. In very windy areas it may be necessary to stake a tree. If this is the case they should be tied loosely to the stake allowing an inch or two of room to sway. Also, a wide strip of material that won’t hurt the tree should be used so as not to damage the trunk. Good materials include old T-shirts, canvas, or rubber inner tubes. Wire or other such materials can do a lot of damage if they dig into the trunk of the tree. The stake should be removed after the first year to allow roots to further develop. A professional tree service will be able to help you assess your trees and stake them if needed.

If are in the Las Vegas area and have questions about staking trees, contact Nevada Tree at 702-433-4700.

Tree

There are many reasons for tree removal in Las Vegas. The harsh weather can make it hard for trees to thrive without proper care. Technical felling is the term tree services use to describe the many ways crews use to get wood on the ground where they want it and when each and every time. Training is required to make sure trees, or sections of trees, fall where the crew wants during a removal. It is very dangerous to try to remove a tree or part of a tree on your own without this knowledge. If you have a tree you would like trimmed or removed it is always best to contact a tree service in your area to remove it safely.

Newly Planted Trees

The long term health of a tree is mostly due to the care it receives in the first year after planting. If mistakes are made in the beginning of a tree’s life it is very difficult to make up for them later on in its life. Caring for newly planted trees properly will help ensure your tree will be around for years to come. There are many things that should be avoided while caring for newly planted trees. These include staking and fertilizing, while soil testing, mulching and watering are all beneficial for trees. Pruning can be helpful but only to fix structural flaws, as the tree needs leaves to photosynthesize. Removing too many branches and leaves can hinder the trees growth. These are general guidelines. A tree service can help you determine the best methods for caring for your specific trees.
